What is hot throw and cold throw?

You may have heard the terms “cold throw” and “hot throw”, but what do they mean? “Throw” describes how well scent travels from a candle. “Cold throw” is how well scent travels from a candle before it is lit – i.e. cold, and “hot throw” is how well scent travels after it is lit, i.e. cold. Both are important. A great cold throw is going to get those important in-store purchases when customers are impressed by a strong scent. Hot throw is what will get return purchases and regular customers. This is why it is so important to not just judge a fragrance oil based on the scent in the bottle. Fragrance can perform differently in different types of wax – for instance a fragrance may work better in coconut or soy. This is why we have produced Fragranced Tester Candles so you can test the hot and cold throw of a fragrance with minimal fuss and effort on your end. We use all Eroma products so you can achieve the same results for your collection. If you’re doing your own testing of your own product, we recommend testing your candle in a few different rooms to determine how your candle performs in an enclosed room vs a room that is more open plan. It’s always helpful to get a second opinion from friends or family as our noses all perceive scent differently. When testing only burn one candle at a time and avoid having any other scented products in the room such as diffusers as this may impact your results.
