How to Make a Reed Diffuser
Diffusers are one of the easiest ways to fragrance your world, they're a great flameless option if you have children or pets around. At Eroma we have lots of options to personalise your diffuser with a variety of stylish lids and reeds so you can make it your own.
We chose long and thick fibre sticks in this example as this provides more surface area for fragrance distribution, so this will be well suited to a large room. For a smaller room you may wish to use thinner or shorter sticks.

TOTAL TIME: 5-10 mins
MAKES: 1 Diffuser
SKILL LEVEL: Beginner
ESTIMATED COST: $10
Equipment/Tools
- 1 x pouring jug
- Newspaper, plastic sheet

Instructions
We recommend starting out with an 80/20 ratio of diffuser base to fragrance oil.
The Tall Boston Diffuser Bottle holds 210ml of liquid and we used 200ml for our calculations. We used 160ml of diffuser base with 40ml of fragrance oil.
Before starting, cover your work area with newspaper or similar, to protect it in case of spilling of any fluid. Please be careful of your clothes too. We suggest you wear gloves to avoid any oil residue transferring to your hands.
Step 1 - Measure diffuser base
Pour 160ml of diffuser base into a measuring jug.
Step 2 - Add fragrance oil
Add 40ml of fragrance oil to the diffuser base.
Step 3 - Stir liquid
Use a spare diffuser stickor spoon to stir liquid, combining the diffuser base and fragrance oil well.
Step 4 - Pour liquid into glassware
Decant the combined liquid into the diffuser glassware.
Step 5 - Style your diffuser
Customise the diffuser with your chosen lid and insert diffuser sticks.
Tips for maintaining reed diffusers
- Rotate the diffuser reeds so that the top end is wet to create a strong scent in the room. You can do this as you please, some people prefer weekly, others monthly.
- Give the liquid a stir weekly using your diffuser reeds
Please note:
Always keep diffuser bases and fragrance oils out of reach of children and pets. Consult a fragrance's MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet) on its product page to inform yourself of any possible hazards when using a fragrance oil. All our fragrance oils are suitable to mix with diffuser bases and to use in diffuser oils.
