Double Boiler: Tips, Tricks & Remedies

A double boiler setting is one of the most used methods for candle makers to heat and melt their wax. A double boiler is created by placing a pouring jug (containing the wax) into another pot containing water and is designed to promote slow and even heating. It's similar to the method one would use to melt chocolate.

Candle makers use this technique because the pouring pot will not receive direct contact with the heat source and this method is much safer than others. This method helps promote a smooth, even wax pour and minimises the risk of dangerous temperatures and wax splatter. Never leave your wax to melt unattended.

Setup

  1. To begin, find an old pot that is large enough to fit your  pouring pot  into.
  2. Add an inch or two of water into the old pot.
  3. Bring to the boil.
  4. Place the pouring pot directly into this boiling water. You may wish to place an inexpensive metal cookie cutter (or similar item) in the bottom of your old pot to help elevate the pouring pot.
  5. Lower the heat to a simmer or low-medium temperature setting.
  6. Have a  thermometer  handy so that you can continually check the temperature of the water to keep it under 85 degrees Celsius.
  7. Stay conscious of the water level inside the double boiler as evaporation can cause the double boiler to run dry and potentially apply direct heat to your pouring jug. Top up water level, as necessary.
  8. Allow wax to melt until it is completely liquified. Make sure you always pour the wax at the temperature specific to that type.
